Your next Challenge is a homage to Quidditch... of the Muggle variety. It joins a long line of attempted non-magical adaptations of this inherently magical sport, in which the rules are absurd enough even as a plot device. And yet, who among us has not offered a condescending gawk at the concept of Muggle Quidditch leagues, while also silently wishing that we had enough self-confidence to join in?
Our version of Quidditch will involve a Random Image Trigger which, when posted, will turn into an image of a Quidditch ball. Which one? Well that is of course the key - they'll be coming at you entirely at random. And each ball will present you with a choice about how to react, which will affect your score.
To begin the Challenge join the 'Random Balls' member group to gain access to a hidden board containing the Random Image Trigger. You will have fifteen minutes from the moment you press the 'Join Group' button to post the Random Image Trigger over and over, as many times as you can, while also reacting to the balls you Trigger and deciding what to do with them. (Be aware though that Proboards uses a 'flood control' monitor which prevents you from posting more than once every ten seconds.)
If you Trigger a Quaffle: you have two options. To give your nearest Chaser a quick chance to score, your next post should say one of 'LEFT HOOP', 'MIDDLE HOOP' or 'RIGHT HOOP' depending on which goalhoop you wish to aim for. Your choice of goalhoop will be compared to a pre-prepared randomised list of Keeper actions to determine whether you are successful. If the Keeper is defending the same goalhoop you aimed for, you will score 0 Points. If the Keeper is defending one of the other two goalhoops, you will score 10 Points.
Alternatively, you may choose to take a risk. To attempt a Chaser pass formation that is guaranteed to get through the Keeper, you should post the Random Image Trigger again instead of aiming for a particular goalhoop. If you Trigger anything but another Quaffle, the formation will fail and you will score 0 points. However, if you do Trigger a second Quaffle in a row, the pass formation will succeed and you will automatically score 10 points. You will also be able to continue the formation by posting the Random Image Trigger again and again, scoring 10 more points for every consecutive Quaffle you Trigger until the sequence gets interrupted, without needing to aim around a Keeper.
If you Trigger a Bludger: you also have two options. Either attempt to dodge the Bludger by ignoring it and posting the Random Image Trigger again in your next post, or type 'BEAT THAT BLUDGER' in next post to send the Bludger far away. If you ever Trigger two Bludgers in a row without beating the first one away in between, your dodge attempt will fail and you will not be allowed to post again for 30 seconds - if you do accidentally make any posts during those 30 seconds, they will not count.
Finally, if you Trigger a Golden Snitch: you again have two options. If you ignore the Snitch and try the Random Image Trigger again in your next post, your Seeker will feint away from the Snitch and distract the other players - you will score nothing, but the Challenge will continue. Alternatively, you may post 'CATCH THE SNITCH' in your next post to earn yourself 50 points, while also ending the Challenge and locking in whatever score you have achieved so far.
If you never catch a Golden Snitch, the Challenge will end after fifteen minutes (as measured from the moment you joined the 'Quidditch' Member Group). Any posts you make after that time, or after catching a Golden Snitch, will not be scored.
Note that we can and will check your posts to ensure that you posted the Random Image Trigger each time, and did not just post an image normally. Any such instances of cheating will result in automatic disqualification from the Challenge and a score of zero, the equivalent of a DNS. We will also disqualify anyone who posts the Random Image Trigger (or any of the images it uncovers) outside of their own Challenge thread.
One more thing you need to know:
In most ORGs, Challenges in the Side stage are decided based on the combined scores/times of all the players on a Side. However, you may have noticed by now that the ORG of the Phoenix is not most ORGs So instead, the Challenges will be broken down into Matches in which pairs of Pureblood vs Order partners face off against one another. We will compare the final scores achieved by both partners in the Challenge and the highest score of the two will claim the Match for their Side. Any players competing in the Challenge without a Pureblood vs Order partner competing on the other Side will be matched up randomly instead - today this means the Regulus and Mundungus will share a Match.
The Side which wins the most Matches will win Immunity and avoid Magical Council for the round, The Side that wins the fewest Matches will lose the Challenge and will need to vote out one of their Side Buddies at Magical Council tomorrow night. The Side with more Match wins will be safe for the round.
As an example, let's say that the Ministers were playing and that the PBvO pairs were Xenophilius/Bellatrix and Minerva/Dolores. With Xenophilius/Minerva on one Side, and Bellatrix/Dolores on the other.
In the first Match, Xenophilius beats Bellatrix, claiming the Match for his Side.
In the second Match, Minerva ties with Dolores, so no Side claims the Match.
Regardless of what the four players actually scored in their runs of the Challenge, we would announce the results as 1 Match won for the Xenophilius/Minerva Side, and 0 Matches won for the Minerva/Dolores Side. And the latter would need to attend the next Magical Council.
In addition, because it is possible for individual Matches (and thus the overall count of Matches won) to tie, each Side must appoint one Side Buddy as their Side Prefect for this Challenge - in the event of a tie the two Side Prefects' scores will be compared in a final tiebreaker Match. The Side Prefect selection is the only aspect of the Challenge which you may discuss together as a Side, on your Side Board, and anyone who has begun playing the Challenge can no longer contribute to these discussions. Note that the Side Prefect position comes with no hidden benefits; their sole purpose is to decide a Challenge if a tiebreaker match is required.
To extend the above example, if Dolores had won the second Match, tying the results at 1 Match for each Side, we would decide the Challenge based on the Side Prefects. If these were Bellatrix and Minerva, we would look at their individual scores for the Challenge and the higher score would win the whole thing for their Side.
You must complete this Challenge by 8:30pm AEST (board time) tomorrow (Wednesday).
You may not discuss anything about the Challenge with any other player until after this deadline has passed.
You may not discuss anything about the Challenge with any other player until after this deadline has passed.
The Challenge results will be posted as soon as possible after the deadline. Players on the losing Side will be allowed to send Patronus Missives up until 9:15pm AEST, when their Magical Council will begin. Their Votes and the winners' Switch/Flick charm decisions must be posted in their relevant threads by the deadline of 9:30pm AEST.
You are strongly encouraged to leave Votes and cast Switch/Flick charms even before results are announced and it becomes clear which is required of your Side. Even if you plan to check in and confirm/change your decisions between the results announcement and the Voting deadline, it is better to be safe than sorry, and there have been plenty of ORGs where pivotal votes have broken differently when players were kept offline unexpectedly.
If you have any questions about the Challenge, please ask! And please do so before joining the Member Group!
